Beatties has been a fixture in St. Catharines for over 165 years, beginning in 1860.

Originally founded by Mr. D.W. Bixby and Mr. P. Izzard, operating as "Izzard & Bixby Booksellers and Stationers" in downtown St. Catharines. Interestingly, the business started out as a community lending library and wallpaper shop.

In 1864, Izzard left the business and Bixby became the sole proprietor, renaming it D.W. Bixby Books and Stationery. When Bixby died in 1908, his widow took over and hired a young Lawrence Beattie as a delivery boy — who would eventually purchase the business from her and rename it the Bixby-Beattie Company.

By 1948, the business was incorporated with Lawrence Beattie as President. By 1968, Lawrence's nephew Rodger Beattie took over as President and led significant expansion, opening branch stores in Fort Erie (1971), Welland (1976), and Niagara Falls (1980).

Today, Beatties combines local roots with leading-edge technology to help you work smarter — with exceptional service, seamless document management, and workflows built for modern business.
